Twenty10 began in 1982 when a group of passionate community volunteers created a housing refuge in response to the increased houselessness of young LGBTIQA+ young people in and around Sydney. Twenty10 takes our name from the Darlinghurst postcode where the original housing refuge was located, 2010.
Twenty10 is also the official NSW partner of QLife, a nationwide telephone and web peer-based support service. QLife is organised by the National LGBTI Health Alliance and funded by the Australian Government.

Our History
In March 1982, a group of dedicated volunteer youth and health workers began the Kings Cross and Darlinghurst youth project to support ‘gay youth’ in the area, called Twenty-Ten, reflecting the suburb’s postcode 2010. The project quickly grew, and relocated to Glebe, where the organisation ran a refuge for many years.
The previous decade, the Campaign Against Moral Persecution (CAMP) was founded by passionate local activists in 1970, and in 1973 they started a telephone support service ‘Phone a Friend’, which later became the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service of NSW (GLCS NSW).
Following a long history of supporting each other, the two organisations began sharing a building in Newtown, before operationally merging in 2011 and a new headquarters was opened in Chippendale in 2012. Since that time, the organisation’s services have diversified and strengthened, so that Twenty10 is Australia’s largest and longest running organisation working with LGBTIQA+ youth. GLCS NSW services continue today as part of QLife, Australia’s first national peer-support and referral service for people who are LGBTIQ+.
In December of 2023 the organisation won the tender opened by The Inner West Council to lead the newly established Inner West Pride Centre at 1 Bedford Street, Newtown which opened for service in September 2024, and from February 2025 was made available for community use through bookings of the Pride Hall and Rainbow Room spaces.
Today, we celebrate our heritage of supporting young LGBTIQA+ folks for over 40 years. We’re committed to continuing to provide a broad range of free, accessible mental health and psychosocial support programs, as well as creative and digital programs, events, safe spaces, and delivering specialist capacity building training all over NSW to continue building a world where LGBTIQA+ people of NSW are secure, connected and celebrated.
